The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Continues through to January 25

An Ecumenical Service - Sunday, January 25, 2026

The 2026 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will take place on January 25, 2025 during the evensong service at Christ Church Cathedral in Victoria. The service beings at 4pm and there will be a reception to follow. All are welcome. This service will be livestreamed. Please visit the Christ Church Cathedral website to connect with the livestream on the day of the service.

Guests will include the children’s choir of the Victoria Ethiopian Orthodox Church and Rev. Wes Denyer of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church as preacher.

Children and the Church

Children and the Church

The Education Committee is hosting a conversation for parents and anyone else who is interested in ministry with children and youth at St Michael’s. We’ll meet during the first half of the service, in the rectory board room, on Sunday, February 1, at 9.25 a.m.

We are facing several challenges, including age range, unpredictable attendance, lack of appropriate resources, and a need for adult volunteers. The most important question, though, is “What are the best practices for engaging kids in the life, belief and practices of the Church, and what expectations do we have for their formation as young Christians?” We’ve got some wonderful young people here, and they deserve our best. – MAT

Preparing for Ash Wednesday

Preparing for Ash Wednesday

Bringing Back Palm Crosses – Lent is just around the corner, beginning February 18. This means it is time to collect last year’s palm crosses, so they can be burnt for use on Ash Wednesday.

Beginning next Sunday, there will be a basket at the back of the church for this purpose.

The Church in the Shadow of Empire

Please sign up for our Lenten Study Program – Lent is traditionally a time for paying extra attention to prayer, and for intentional learning. This year we are offering “Five Wednesdays in Lent: The Church in the Shadow of Empire.”

Contemporary theology and biblical studies are very focused on what the bible says about the place of the people of God in the face of geo-political and economic power-seeking (for example, threats to annex other countries, or to impede economic well-being).  The plan is to meet for a short service of Evening Prayer at 4.30 p.m., followed by a soup supper, and then a conversation based on Preston Sprinkle’s very readable book, Exiles: the Church in the Shadow of Empire. We’ll wind up by 7.00 p.m. at the latest each week.

The series runs from February 25-March 25 inclusive.

We do need to order copies of the book, so if you are interested, please sign the sheet posted in the narthex, or be in touch with Sara our parish administrative assistant (contact info below). The book costs $17.  If this poses a hardship, a quiet word with Dean Ansley will solve the problem. - MAT

Services in real time

With our new technological capacities we are so happy to be able offer 'real time' services via Livestream on YouTube each week, for those of you who, for one reason or another are unable to make the services in person, but don't want to miss out!

While nothing beats the in-person experience of being in the Sanctuary to worship with your spiritual community, it is a blessing to have the Livestream option now available, thanks to the technical acumen of Angela & Brian Goddard and Lanny Hubbard.

Each week there is a new link provided here in the newsletter, so please make sure you watch this space for the latest link to attend the service live.

Here is the link to tune in this Sunday: https://youtube.com/live/HYVpiygSitM?feature=share

Sunday Services at St Michael and All Angels

Sunday Services at St Michael and All Angels

Our Sunday 8:30am service is shaped by the 1962 Book of Common Prayer. The lilt and rhythm of old English finds its way into this liturgy, and some beautiful turns of phrase illuminate this service where there is no music. While the service itself is quiet, regular attendees are lively, friendly and very welcoming.

Our Sunday 10:30am service, shaped by the Book of Alternative Services, includes music and more contemporary language and images for understanding God. This service is normally recorded and available for view on Sunday afternoon on the website.
